Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive-behavioral treatment that was developed
by Marsha Linehan, PhD. This is an effective model for treating individuals who engage in impulsive
behaviors, have difficulty managing emotions, struggle with interpersonal relationships and have a confused sense of self.
If you have a history of self-harm/suicidal behaviors, eating disorders, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, anger outbursts
or phobia, you may benefit from DBT treatment.
DBT is divided into different modes of treatment that include the following:
1. Weekly Indvidual Therapy
Through a variety of DBT specific interventions individual therapy is used to address the following treatment goals:
Decrease self-harming and suicidal behaviors
(e.g., cutting, suicidal ideation, plans, threats)
Decrease therapy-interfering behaviors (e.g., missing
or coming late to sessions, not returning phone calls,
not doing therapy homework, etc)
Decrease quality-of-life interfering behaviors
(e.g., depression, substance dependence, anxiety,
etc.)
2. Skills Training
In this course, you will learn new behavioral skills. Skills may be taught in a group or individual setting. Throughout treatment you are coached to apply these skills to your daily life.
Behavioral skills taught include:
Mindfulness: How to take charge of your mind and
become aware of your emotions
Distress Tolerance: How to avoid making a bad
situation worse and how to use crisis survival skills.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: How to deal with
conflicts, get what you want, and maintain good
relationships
Emotion Regulation: How to get control of your
emotions and keep negative emotions from running
your life
3. Phone Coaching
Between sessions I am available for phone coaching.
The purpose of the coaching call is to help you apply your new skills to problem situations in everyday life. Our calls will be
brief and will focus on resolving a current problem.
4. Therapist Consultation Team
To ensure quality treatment and adherence to DBT protocol, I am a member of a DBT community consultation team.
